Hello! My name's Maxine and I am a highly experienced writer and editor, specialising in developing magazines for women and children – and I'm a children's story expert.
To date, I have project-managed over 25 new magazine titles. Some of these have been original and some have involved working with major brands and licenses, utilising existing style guides. Over the years, I have led numerous editorial teams and commissioned many writers, experts and photographers. I have also written for the majority of these magazines in a variety of styles, contributing children’s short stories, comic strips, interviews, reviews, step-by-step guides and non-fiction features on health, beauty, food, nature and entertainment.
I started my career at the BBC working in TV listings, later diversifying into women's health. I worked as the health editor for a start-up teen website and later for BBC Radio 1's website. I have also contributed features and developed content for River Publishing's titles, David Lloyd Leisure and Weight Watchers. I later became a development editor and then managing editor for an international publisher, focusing on women's and children's magazine launches.
In late 2009, I set up Luma Works – the publishing and packaging agency I co-own, alongside an art director and marketing director. With Luma Works, I develop magazines for international publishers, working with them from initial concept pitches and focus group materials through to test and national launches, and I create educational resources for a range of visitor attractions. As a team, we are able to offer a full range of services to get new print and digital products off the ground, ensuring they excel any criteria for success.
I am also currently the editor of Storytime – an illustrated monthly story magazine for children aged three to nine. Storytime is published by Luma Works and launched in late 2014. It now has subscribers in over 50 countries and a special Singapore edition. I research, plan and edit every issue, and create supporting teaching resources for schools. I love writing brand new stories for Storytime, as well as reworking classics for a modern readership.
I take real pleasure in getting to know the unique needs of each brand and client I work with and enjoy helping them achieve the perfect content for their readers or customers – content that adds meaning and value. In an increasingly throwaway world, I've been extremely lucky to create high-quality magazines and materials that can be treasured forever, and I like to treat every project I work on in this way – like your content will make a difference.
